A Community With a Story

Established in 1823 as the county seat of Fentress County, Jamestown has been at the heart of this region for more than two centuries. Originally known as “Sand Springs” because of the area's natural springs, Jamestown has connections to some remarkable chapters of American history.

The family of Samuel Clemens — better known as Mark Twain — once called the area home, and a spring used by the Clemens family remains in what is now Mark Twain City Park. Fentress County is also the home of legendary World War I hero Sgt. Alvin C. York. Today, Jamestown continues to honor that history while looking toward the opportunities of tomorrow.
